What is RFID?

The acronym RFID is interpreted in two different ways i.e Radio Frequency Identification or Radio Frequency Identification Devices; in either way it is right but most commonly the word devices is not included. RFID system consist of small electronic circuits mainly chip with antenna that contains stored information and a reading module that interpret the stored information. RFID is a wireless technology as it operates on radio waves. The RFID tag chip has ability to store data from few bits to 500 kilobytes. The picture below shows the main components of RFID system.


What is RFID

RFID works on the same pattern as bar code, QR code or magnetic strip on any visa / debit or loyalty cards. Each RFID chip contains a unique identification number that never duplicates in any other RFID tag. This unique id is called EPC (Electro Product Code). Like bar code the RFID tags return the information stored when bring into reading range of radio waves.


RFID advantages Over Barcodes

Like bar code the RFID tag does not need line of sight for returning stored information to computer. Barcode scan one item at one time while RFID reader scan over 100 tags in one second with more accuracy.


Comarison Barcode Vs RFID

The greatest advantage of RFID tag over barcode is to avoid duplication and control theft of an item when going out without scanning (email or call for details). RFID device does not need to put in a certain position and neither the tag needs to be place in front of device for scanning like in case of bar code scanning. RFID tags easily scanned at a distance and only needs an area of radio waves. RFID tags operate at variety of frequencies for that reason it can be detected from few cm to 10 meter or more depending upon its usage and industry requirements.


RFID Technology can replace the bar code with more accuracy and speed. It reduces the time and cost and hence help organization growth.
